Description of lesson: In this lesson we will be discussing the definition of life and what qualifies something as living or not living. We will be touching base on how plants and animals are both living things, but will discuss in further depth later in the unit. The children will be given a time to share about siblings, pets, and if they have any plants at home.
Assignment: The in-class assignment will be to tell the class what they already know about life, animals, and plants. They can talk about things they have at home, or things they see at the park or zoo, and etc. They will have a small home work assignment which is to go home, and when they get there, they will need to count and list how many living things they have in their home. It should be an all inclusive list (family members, pets, plants, etc).
Technology reflection: The technology that was used in order to teach this lesson was a presentation. This gave my students a chance to see all the different types of things that are considered living. The presentation gives my students a chance to learn the information by associating it with pictures and videos rather than by associating the information with just what they hear me talk about in class.
Evaluation: My concern about this lesson is that my children will not understand the concept of living things such as plants that do not walk and talk and breathe. I need to focus on the concept that plants are living things, but I want to make sure it’s just as exciting as learning about other living things. When we get to the actual lesson on plants, I think it will help to let the kids grow their own plants as an in class activity. I just don’t want them to lose their focus on plants this early into the unit.
